Former Los Angeles Angels shortstop José Iglesias has found a new home.
The 33-year-old veteran has signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets. The Athletic’s Will Sammon was among the first to report the news.
Iglesias spent one season in Orange County in 2021. In 114 games with the Halos that season, Iglesias slashed .259/.295/.375 with a .670 OPS, collecting eight home runs and 41 RBIs in 424 at-bats.
The one-time All-Star was released later that season by the Halos to make roster space for pitcher Janson Junk. Three days after being released, Iglesias signed with the Boston Red Sox. He’s found a home with a new team every year since then.
The infielder spent the last half of 2023 with the San Diego Padres but didn’t appear in any MLB games. Now he has a new home with the Mets entering 2024, where incumbent shortstop Francisco Lindor is coming off a typically strong season.
Iglesias might have a hard time reaching the majors on a minor league deal with Lindor in his way. An injury could change that, and we’ll see if he’s able to make a big enough impact in spring training to warrant a roster spot down the road.
