The conclusion of this year’s Masters on Sunday will also bring to an end one of the legendary broadcasting careers, as CBS’ Verne Lundquist is retiring after calling the tournament for 40 years.
His voice has served as the backdrop for so many iconic moments at Augusta, perhaps none more memorable than Tiger Woods’ 2005 chip on the 16th hole before going on to win his fourth career Masters. It was fitting on Lundquist’s final day that Woods was still playing, and Lundquist was right there to watch him on 16.
After making par, Woods walked up to shake Lundquist’s hand for one last iconic moment between the legends.
“A man with magic in his hands, looked on by a man with magic in his voice. Those two, over the last 25 years, the definition of The Masters.”
