Springboks eye global domination with R1.4 billion deal

The Springboks, South Africa’s rugby giants, are nearing a game-changing £60 million (R1.4 billion) investment deal with Ackerley Sports Group (ASG).

The four-time world champions, and current number one team, could enter a new era of commercial growth if the South African Rugby Union (SARU) approves the deal.

Unlocking Commercial Potential

This potential investment would create a new business venture to manage the Springboks’ diverse revenue streams, encompassing everything from sponsorship and broadcasting to matchday income and content.

While SARU will remain the majority owner, ASG would acquire a 20% stake, implying a total business valuation of £300 million. “To work with SARU to bring this brand to the next level globally is an incredible opportunity,” states ASG’s Chris Ackerley.

Springboks Investment Follows Global Trend

Mirroring a similar 2022 deal with the New Zealand All Blacks, this investment reflects an increasing trend of private equity interest in rugby’s top brands. Ackerley Sports intends to expand the Springboks’ global reach, with a particular focus on the growing US market.

“There’s very few teams across the world that have had the success the Springboks have had,” notes Timothy Kirkwood, ASG partner. “We see the on-field performance, but there’s potential to unlock greater commercial success too.”

The Springboks: A Rich Rugby Legacy

With roots dating back to 1891, the Springboks are synonymous with rugby excellence. Their 1995 World Cup triumph remains a symbol of South Africa’s unity and inspired the film “Invictus”.

Ackerley Sports Group, known for investments in major sports franchises, sees a compelling opportunity to capitalize on the Springboks’ history and future potential.
