In a crackdown on anti-semitism, a historic gesture symbolising hatred will soon be outlawed across the country.
Public displays of the Nazi salute will be banned by the Federal Government in a continuation of new counter-terrorism laws.
The Commonwealth in June proposed outlawing displays of Nazi hate symbols such as the swastika, as well as the flag of the Islamic State terror group.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus will introduce the changes in Federal Parliament on Wednesday to make the salute a criminal offence under Commonwealth law.
“The Albanese Government will ban the public display of the Nazi salute, making clear there is no place in Australia for those who seek to glorify hatred,” Mr Dreyfus said.
“The amendments will ensure that no one will be allowed to glorify or profit from acts and symbols which celebrate the Nazis and their evil ideology.
