“Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on major highways in the South-Central Pennsylvania region consisting of Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties,” PennDOT said in a statement.

Speeds are reduced to 45 mph on the following roads:

  • Interstates 78, 81, 83 and 283
  • Routes 15, 22, 30, 222, 283, and 581

On roadways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane, PennDOT said.

Tier 1 restrictions (see definition below) are in effect for these roads:

  • PA Turnpike (I-76) from New Stanton (Exit 75) to Carlisle (Exit 226).
  • I-99, entire length.

Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:

  • Tractors without trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
  • Enclosed, unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
  • Motorcycles.
