Clemson football fans aren’t too happy with their head coach but, if nothing else, Dabo Swinney’s buyout will keep him from getting fired.
Dabo Swinney has not been leading the Clemson Tigers to success in the 2021 season. On the contrary, they team just lost its third game of the year on Saturday to Pitt, giving them two defeats in ACC play and likely taking them out of the conference championship picture.
Naturally, Clemson football fans are unhappy with the way things have played out this season, especially when they see D.J. Uiagalelei getting benched against the Panthers. And that often leads to fans wondering if the program should cut ties with their head coach.
While there are many arguments as to why that’s not happening, the buyout number for Dabo Swinney makes it virtually impossible for him to be fired.
The Dabo Swinney buyout number is the main reason he’s not getting fired anytime soon
Dabo Swinney has a buyout of a whopping $47.5 million if he were fired in 2021. That’s a number that no athletic director in the country would be willing to pay to dismiss a head coach.
So based on that number alone, Clemson football is going to remain under Swinney’s watch for the foreseeable future.
Having said that, even considering firing the head coach would be a massive overreaction from Tigers fans. This is a coach with proven national championship pedigree who has built this program into a perennial contender but is having a down year. It stinks but it does happen.
So yes, this is a tough year for Dabo and Clemson. But he’s definitely not going anywhere.
