Police officer son of former deputy PM Michael McCormack to face court on assault charges

A police officer and son of former deputy prime minister Michael McCormack has been charged over an alleged assault in Sydney.

Nicholas James McCormack, 26, is understood to have been arrested around 1am on Saturday following reports of an alleged assault on William St in Darlinghurst.

In a statement, NSW Police said the “male constable attached to a specialist command” was taken to Kings Cross Police Station.

He was then charged with three counts of common assault and one count of common assault, domestic violence related.

Mr McCormack was granted conditional bail and will face Downing Centre Local Court on the charges on December 13.

Court records also list two applications by NSW Police for an apprehended violence order on behalf of a woman and a man.

The 26-year-old is the youngest son of former Nationals leader Michael McCormack, who was also deputy prime minister from 2018 to 2021.

The younger McCormack graduated from Goulburn Police Academy in 2020, with his graduation ceremony held at the Sydney Cricket Ground with his father and then-prime minister Scott Morrison in attendance.

A spokesperson from NSW Police said investigations into the matter are “continuing”.

“The officer’s employment status is currently under review,” the spokesperson said.

Michael McCormack, from Wagga, was elected to the House of Representatives for the Riverina region in 2010 in the Nationals party.

Before he ventured into politics, he was editor of the city’s newspaper The Daily Advertiser.
