Northeast braces for massive winter storms set to hit next week from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts - with experts saying they could mimic 'Snowmaggedon' of 2010 and won't rule out a bombogenesis

  • Weather forecasters are tracking a massive winter storm that may touch down in the northeast right in time for Valentines Day
  • It’s unclear exactly how many inches are coming, but forecasters predict moderate to heavy snow from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts through Tuesday
  • New York and New Jersey residents will still be able to enjoy the spring-like temperatures in February before the storm hits

The Northeast braces for massive winter storms, with experts saying some could mimic ‘Snowmaggedon’ of 2010 and won’t rule out a bombogenesis.

Weather forecasters are tracking a massive winter storm that may touch down in the northeast right in time for Valentines Day.

The polar vortex is expected to weaken, unleashing a cold blast across the US, with the possibility of a ‘bombogenesis,’ known as a bomb cyclone, that occurs when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, like air or ocean waters.

While forecasters are favoring a mix of rain and snow for some areas along the Atlantic Coast Monday night, they are struggling to pin down the specific impacts of the winter storm and determine exact snow amounts.

‘We’re tracking the potential for an impactful winter storm across the Northeast, likely from late Monday into Tuesday,’ AccuWeather meteorologist Isaac Longley told the Boston Herald on Thursday.

‘There is a lack of cold air, so the system could bring a mix of rain and snow closest to the coast, while there could be more significant snow across the inland and higher terrain,’ he added.

New York has only seen a measly 2.3 inches of snow this season, but some forecasters are predicting the possibility of another 15 inches.

According to the mid-winter forecast by FOX 5 NY’s Nick Gregory, this could happen if just one or two ‘decent’ size storms touch down this winter.

FOX Forecast Center predicts the storm may initially begin as rain along the Atlantic Coast Monday night, before it strengthens from rain to snow as the temperature gets colder.

It’s unclear exactly how many inches New York can expect – but forecasters predict a ‘fairly widespread swath’ of moderate-to-heavy snow from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts through Tuesday.

‘I think winter will be prolonged here, and I do think that we’ll probably have a good surge of cold weather coming in the middle part of February, [creating the potential for a snow storm or two,’ Gregory said.

While northern New Jersey may see flurries on Monday night into Tuesday morning, South Jersey is more likely to see plain rain.

There is still a 40 percent chance of over 4 inches of snow in northwestern New Jersey and a 30 percent chance for about 2 inches of snow near Philadelphia, according to the National Weather Service.

‘The overall pattern is not very conducive to significant snowfall along and east of the I-95 corridor, as a nearly perfect balance of all these factors would need to take place,’ the National Weather Service said.

‘Also working against snowier outcomes, fairly mild air and easterly winds flowing off the Atlantic on Monday should tend to keep the precipitation mainly in the form of rain outside of our far northwest zones.’

New York and New Jersey residents will still be able to enjoy the spring-like temperatures in February before a storm hits.

But the warmth before the storm may come to an abrupt stop when El Nino weather pattern collides with freezing temperatures from Canada, potentially unleashing a blizzard similar to that of 2010’s ‘Snowmageddon.’

The February 2010 storm, dubbed ‘Snowmageddon,’ was a major blizzard that caused major impacts across the Northeast, including the death of 41 people.

‘I think there are a couple snowstorms down the pipe,’ AccuWeather Inc. forecaster Paul Pastelok told Bloomberg. ‘A big storm or two is not off the charts here for February or early March.’

Washington DC isn’t expected to bear the brunt of these upcoming storms, but the city was pummeled with snow during the last ‘snowmageddon.’

This comes in the aftermath of a deadly storm on the West Coast, leaving nine people dead and a trail of destruction after five days of rain in California.

The storm, fueled by El Niño, resulted in widespread power outages, road closures and flooding.
