gm explains why chargers won't land two high-profile hc candidates

Bill Belichick.

Los Angeles Chargers fans who hope Bill Belichick or Jim Harbaugh will fill its head-coaching vacancy might be in store for more disappointment.

The Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora noted NFL executives believe they won’t land either of these candidates because the front office isn’t willing to cede control.

“Bill Belichick and [Chargers president of football operations] John Spanos, that won’t work,” one general manager told La Canfora. “Same thing with Harbaugh. He’s’ going to want to bring his own GM, and those guys aren’t going to want to report to John Spanos, either. That’s’ a family business, and they do things a certain way, and Harbaugh is not the kind of guy they hire.”

On Monday, Spanos — the son of owner Dean — told the media the organization will have “no limitations” on its HC and GM search to dispel concerns about the job.

Landing Belichick or Harbaugh would make a difference. Belichick has won Coach of the Year three times and six Super Bowls in 24 seasons with the New England Patriots. Harbaugh served as San Francisco 49ers HC from 2011-14, leading them to a Super Bowl XLVII appearance. He’s also guided the Wolverines to three College Football Playoff trips in nine seasons with Michigan.

However, if Los Angeles isn’t willing to make changes and give an HC power, expect more underwhelming results. Since Spanos assumed his role in 2015, the Chargers are 66-78 despite having franchise QBs in Justin Herbert and Philip Rivers.

It’s apparent L.A. must change the way it operates and should try to land an HC with a proven track record. It will help the franchise end its cycle of mediocrity and become a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
