Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson was substituted after just seven minutes of his side’s game against Newcastle on Saturday.

The Brazilian was clattered into by Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff and his team-mate, Kyle Walker, as the former netted what he thought was the opening goal of the game, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

The goal involved a long ball over the top from the home defence, with Aleksandar Isak running onto it against City’s high line.

Though Isak was offside, the linesman’s flag remained down, as is the general ruling in the Premier League, only to be raised once the ball had gone into the net.

Ederson, however, was the one that suffered. He was forced to go off after treatment, with Stefan Ortega replacing him.

‘Do you know something, I hope he’s OK and fit enough to recover,’ Ally McCoist, who was on co-commentary for TNT Sports for the game, said. ‘It’s a sore one. That doesn’t happen if the flag goes up. I thought it was obviously offside.

‘You can see Longstaff timed his run well and it’s the follow through. He’s lucky his left knee doesn’t catch him. It could have ben a lot worse. We’ve seen it happen a number of times. It’s been brought up before. I think it’s glaringly obvious offside, he’s got to put his flag up.’

‘I know he’s told not to, I get that. We don’t always get it back but I thought it when the ball was played through. I thought it was an obvious one.’

City are already without John Stones due to a similar incident, with the defender getting injured when play went on in a match against Everton earlier this season despite the game being stopped moments later.

The call came from McCoist to alter the rule, while Darren Fletcher, the lead commentator for the game, called for player safety to be put first.

Ederson initially tried to play on, but was dispossessed almost straight away, with Rodri calling for a substitution and the City goalkeeper then going down again.

‘It’s glaringly obvious,’ McCoist added. ‘It’s clearly evident that he hasn’t recovered at all. He’s got to come off.

‘The one thing you’ve got to say is if I’m Nathan Ake I’m not sure I’m giving him the ball. He clearly didn’t look right. They got away with one there.

‘This is going to provide a talking point again, if they should put flags up.’
