why is yuzvendra chahal snubbed from team india t20 squad
Yuzvendra Chahal, the wily leg-spinner, who is India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, has been repeatedly overlooked for the national team, the latest sting coming in the form of his exclusion from the upcoming T20 series against Afghanistan. This begs the question: what has happened to Chahal, and why is he sitting on the fence?
A dip in form last year and Team India’s emphasis on finger spinners and all-rounders with variations have hampered Chahal’s chances. The rise of talented young leg-spinners like Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav, who offer different types of variations and skill sets, has created healthy competition for places in the squad. His limited abilities with the willow also do more harm than good. Chahal, at 33, might need to adapt and reinvent himself to stay ahead of the curve.
Amidst the conjectures, former Proteas spinner Imran Tahir shared his thoughts and said that it is not like Chahal isn’t bowling well, but others have grabbed the opportunity, especially Kuldeep Yadav.
“I don’t think (Yuzvendra) Chahal is not bowling well. For me, he is bowling good. Chahal was not dropped because he did not do well but got dropped as Kuldeep (Yadav) went a step ahead. He did well with (Ravindra) Jadeja and India found the right balance.” he said.
“Chahal should start afresh because Kuldeep grabbed the opportunity with both hands and now Chahal should wait for his. He is a wonderful bowler and will surely come back,” the former South Africa cricketer explained when asked about Chahal’s omission from the Indian team.
Chahal is a genuine wicket-taker, and his records speak for themselves. In 72 ODIs, Chahal has picked up 121 wickets at an average of 27.13 and an economy of 5.27. In T20Is, he is the highest wicket-taker for India, with 96 wickets. And yet he continues to miss out on big events like the World Cup and occasionally gets chances in bilaterals.
However, it’s important to remember that this is not the end of his journey. Chahal’s hunger and talent haven’t diminished, and his recent performances in domestic cricket are a testament to his fighting spirit. He just needs to find a way to adapt to the evolving demands of the format and prove his indispensability once again.
