Ryan’s Quality Meats: Jandakot butcher wins coveted 2023 Perth Royal Food Award

A “destination butcher” operating out of an industrial precinct in Perth’s south has been recognised as the State’s beef grand champion.

Ryan’s Quality Meats was named overall WA branded beef grand champion for their Stirling Ranges beef, the champion WA grainfed beef for the Stirling Ranges and the champion bacon for the Frankland River free range rindless bacon.

The butcher was recognised at the 2023 Perth Royal Food Awards at Claremont Showground on October 27.

Second-generation owner and managing director Greg Ryan said the win cemented the company’s belief in their product.

The store originally opened out of a shopfront in Hamilton Hill in 1966 before moving to Jandakot 17 years ago.

“The bacon (win) I was very surprised and very happy with because we’d only been doing our pork program for a very short time,” he said.

“We started our pork program probably four years ago doing 100 pigs, now we’re doing 500 pigs in a week.”

The meat seller trades out of a somewhat unlikely location in Jandakot, where shoppers can also visit an aviation or artificial grass business metres away.

It also has a second store in Bunbury.

“We become a destination business because there’s no other retailers,” Mr Ryan said.

“It’s a pretty big achievement in regard to what we’ve done.

“It’s an easy place to shop … again, it comes back to knowledge.”

Mr Ryan said the butcher worked exclusively with WA farmers.

“We’re pumping millions of dollars back into the Great Southern farming community,” he said.

“We’re very supportive of local WA farming families.”

RASWA chief executive Robyn Sermon said the declaration of the winners was perfectly timed for the holiday season.

“These awards provide WA consumers a great guide for selecting WA’s best Christmas ham, best steak or fine salamis for the festive season,” she said.

Other champions on the night included Konvict Jerkey, who were recognised for their jerky/biltong strips with activated charcoal and maple coffee, and Re and Sons for their pancetta rolled mild in the cured goods category.
