Malaysia Open 2024: Satwik-Chirag beat Korea duo to reach men’s doubles final in season’s 1st major tournament
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty staged an impressive comeback, overcoming an 11-18 deficit in the second game to register a 21-18, 22-20 win over Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in the men’s doubles semifinals of Malaysia Open Super 1000 tournament on Saturday. This historic victory marked them as the first Indians in any discipline to reach the final of the Malaysia Open in the Open Era (since 1983).
The dynamic duo, currently ranked World No. 2, continued their exceptional form from 2023, where they had already claimed six titles. Their prowess on the court was evident as they dominated the match against the Korean pair, ensuring a swift and decisive win to move forward in the competition.
The Malaysia Open 2024 was a significant event for Indian badminton, with live updates from the Bukit Jalil Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur keeping fans engaged. While Satwik-Chirag advanced, their compatriots Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto were unfortunately ousted in the women’s doubles quarter-finals after a loss to Japan’s R Iwanaga and K Nakanishi.
