Has Modi government been able to create jobs? Mood of the Nation says this

The Mood of the Nation (MOTN) 2024 survey has provided valuable insights into the economic landscape of India, particularly concerning the performance of the ruling BJP-led NDA government and key indicators like job creation, wealth distribution, household finances, and economic outlook.

has modi government been able to create jobs? mood of the nation says this
The Mood of the Nation’s February 2024 edition is based on a survey of 35,801 respondents in all Lok Sabha seats. The poll was conducted between December 15, 2023, and January 28, 2024. Health warning: Opinion polls can get it wrong.

When it comes to job creation, the survey provides a mixed response. Thirty-two per cent of the respondents said that the government has exceeded expectations, while 25 per cent said little has been done towards driving employment generation. And 31 per cent feel the government has not succeeded in creating jobs at all.

At least 54 per cent of the surveyed citizens said the unemployment situation is very serious, while 17 per cent suggest it is somewhat serious. On the other hand, only 4 per cent said the unemployment situation is not at all serious.

The MOTN survey also highlighted whether the government’s economic policies have contributed to the widening divide between the country’s rich and poor population. Forty-five per cent of those surveyed believed the government’s economic policies have widened the gap, while 37 per cent disagreed.

Fifty-two per cent said big businesses benefitted most from the government’s policies, while 11 per cent said small businesses were the biggest beneficiaries. In contrast, 9 per cent felt the policies benefitted farmers and only 8 per cent said the salaried class benefitted.

Delving deeper, the MOTN survey provided insights into the expenses of citizens and forecasts on household income.

In the MOTN survey, 33 per cent felt expenses have gone up but are still manageable. This is in comparison to 27 per cent in the MOTN survey in August 2023 and 28 per cent in the MOTN survey in January 2023.

At least 62 per cent of the respondents in the latest survey felt it has become difficult to manage, similar to the response in the MOTN survey conducted in August 2023.

The survey noted that 25 per cent of the respondents believe the household income will improve, while 36 per cent feel it will remain the same. At least 30 per cent said it would worsen.

On the position of the Indian economy in the next six months, 34 per cent of the respondents said it will improve, 27 per cent believe it will remain the same and 29 per cent said the situation may worsen.

Meanwhile, 33 per cent of the respondents said India’s economic status has improved since Narendra Modi took charge as Prime Minister, while 29 per cent say the situation has remained the same. However, 35 per cent said the situation had deteriorated.

Apart from this, a whopping 69 per cent of the respondents said India will become the third-largest economy in the world, while 18 per cent disagreed.
