Stephen Curry emerges victorious in NBA-WNBA challenge
NEW DELHI: Stephen Curry showcased his shooting prowess by sinking his final four shots from the right corner, clinching a 29-26 victory over Sabrina Ionescu in a groundbreaking NBA-Women’s NBA Challenge during the NBA All-Star Saturday festivities.
Ionescu had set an impressive benchmark, matching the best scores in the NBA 3-Point Contest, only to be overtaken by Curry’s late surge, culminating in an embrace between the two athletes to celebrate their remarkable performance.
Reflecting on his closing rally to secure victory, Curry remarked, “I knew I had to get hot,” underscoring the intensity of his determination to claim the challenge champion’s belt.
The historic showdown marked the first-ever shootout between elite guards, with Curry, the NBA’s all-time 3-point leader, facing off against Ionescu, the WNBA’s single-season 3-point record holder representing the New York Liberty.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Ionescu emphasized its message to aspiring young athletes, stating, “A night like tonight shows a lot of young girls and young boys that if you can shoot, you can shoot,” emphasizing the importance of determination and skill regardless of gender.
Both competitors showcased their shooting prowess from NBA 3-point range, with Curry using an NBA ball and Ionescu employing a WNBA ball, contributing to a captivating display of precision shooting.
Expressing satisfaction with the event’s success, Curry praised the competitive spirit demonstrated by both athletes and suggested the possibility of similar matchups in the future.
Reflecting on her challenge to Curry, Ionescu recalled her stellar performance in last year’s WNBA 3-Point Contest and expressed excitement about reshaping perceptions and inspiring future generations of athletes.
Curry echoed Ionescu’s sentiments, emphasizing the potential of their matchup to inspire young talent and reshape the narrative surrounding great shooting abilities, underscoring the transformative impact of their presence on the grand stage.
