Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim delivering his speech at the Penang International Zakat Conference at Universiti Sains Malaysia in George Town, Penang, today.
GEORGE TOWN: The substantial zakat (tithes) collection in various states means there should be no more excuses for hardcore poverty in the country, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the main thrust of zakat was to help the poor, hence there must be renewed focus by state zakat authorities to eradicate hardcore poverty.
“Zakat is not about revenue for a country but an institution related to (eradicating) poverty,” he said in opening the Penang International Zakat Conference at Universiti Sains Malaysia here.
“I cannot accept the fact that pockets of hardcore poor remain despite states collecting large amounts of zakat.”
