The Last Dinner Party earn the biggest debut number one album by a band in NINE YEARS - after winning the BRIT Rising Star Award

The Last Dinner Party’s debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy went straight to number one on Friday night, knocking James Arthur out of the top spot.

The band, made up of Abigail Morris, Lizzie Mayland, Emily Roberts, Georgia Davies and Aurora Nishevci secured 32,800 chart sales with their first album in the first week.

It’s the biggest opening week for a chart-topping debut album by a band since 2015, when Years & Years managed 55,000 with their debut LP Communion, according to the Official Charts Company.

Prelude to Ecstasy is also the best seller in UK independent record shops this week, landing at Number oNE on the Official Record Store Chart, and is the biggest vinyl album of the week too.

With over 14,000 vinyl copies included in its total, it’s the highest sales week for a vinyl album since Oasis’ The Masterplan remaster in November.

The band’s incredible chart success pipped Jamie Webster’s ’10 For the People’ to the top spot and saw James Arthur’s fifth album, ‘Bitter Sweet Love’ fall from number two to number 38.

In the past few weeks, The Last Dinner Party have been named both the BRIT Awards’ 2024 Rising Star, and BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024.

Clara Amfo announced the band as the winners of the Rising Star Award on her BBC Radio 1 Future Sounds in December.

The band will hope to follow in the footsteps of Adele, Ellie Goulding, Jorja Smith, Sam Smith, James Bay and Sam Fender, who all previously received the prestigious award.

Formerly known as the Critics’ Choice award, the category is judged by a group of editors and critics, with the prize awarded at the BRIT ceremony – where singer Raye has received a record seven nominations – on Saturday, March 2.

Speaking about their win The Last Dinner Party said: ‘We are so proud beyond measure to have won the BRITs Rising Star.

‘It’s an honour to achieve something so iconic so early on in our career and we can only hope to keep making music that connects with all the incredible people who have listened to and supported us so far. Thank you!’

The indie-rock quartet will perform in Hebden Bridge, at The Trades Club on March 4 as part of BRITs week.

The band described the Rising Star Award as ‘iconic’ and that it was an ‘honour’ before stating that they were ‘proud beyond measure’

The five women who performed live in the studio on the Graham Norton Show at the end of January described the TV host as ‘very shiny in person’ and the experience as ‘insane’

They will be joined by alternative pop singer Rachel Chinouriri who be the support act for the evening.

The group consists of five women writing and performing melody-rich, guitar-heavy leftfield indie-rock dramas.

The band performed live in the studio on the Graham Norton Show at the end of January before Abigail and Emily joined the TV host for a chat.

Talking about their time on the BBC show they posted a picture of the guest lineup which included Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and captioned it: ‘In today’s episode of really very insane things that are happening to us

‘GN is very shiny in person, not in a sweaty bad way mind you, more like an ethereal glow. The good witch of talk shows.’
