screams, cries & pain: harrowing scenes as 9 infants die in a day in bengal’s murshidabad medical college
Murshidabad: A West Bengal hospital echoed with cries and screams of mothers and families when nine newborns died in just one day. The incident that happened in Murshidabad Medical College Hospital triggered panic.
The incident created a lot of chaos and stir in the hospital. The medical college authorities have constituted an investigation committee on this incident. The incident took place in the SNCU ward of Murshidabad Medical College.
According to sources, medical college officials claim that the SNCU ward has a capacity of 54 babies, but around 100 newborns are admitted. Due to this, there remains a possibility of infection spreading.
Most of the children were referred in very poor condition and died. According to the information, most of the children who died were underweight.
According to sources, the college authorities also claimed that all the children are being referred to the medical college due to the renovation of the SNCU ward at Jangipur Super Specialty Hospital.
As a result, the pressure on hospitals to admit patients has increased.
What Claimed Lives Of 9 Infants?
Amit Kumar, Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal of the Medical College & Hospital said, “It is true according to our information nine children have lost their lives. We have set an initial enquiry committee and we have got a preliminary report and in the basis of that I am saying most of the children were malnutritioned and one of the child had a sever heart disease for which we don’t have the infrastructure to treat and we didn’t even get the time.”
He added, “Another problem that we are facing is that the hospital that we have in Jangipur renovation work is going on there and hence all the cases are being referred to our hospital we only have 129 beds and we have around 300 beds, we are trying our best but some children are dying most of them are malnutritioned and under weight and hence it is becoming very difficult for us to save those children as they weigh around 600gm and hence it becomes a big challenge.”
“We are forced to keep more than one patient in a bed, as I told you that the big hospital in the Jangipur area they are not taking patient in several departments all those patients are coming here and if I don’t take their admission then where will they go patient are coming from all over the district,” Amit Kumar said.
