The racing was brilliant, the day beautiful, and the atmosphere electric, but the ladies’ Seine Boat race in Cahersiveen at the weekend was about something bigger than all that.
The event is an important fundraiser for Group 135 of the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, which brings 10 or so children with special needs to Lourdes each Easter, and Denis Daly, involved with and a former leader of Group 135, was thankful for the support given to the event, above anything else.
“I want to thank everyone who took part or was involved in any way,” he told The Kerryman following the weekend racing. “If there are any families with children who have special needs that would like to travel to Lourdes, they can get in contact with any Group 135 member. It’s a great week, and the kids who go with us have a great time, and it’s a break for their parents, which is very important…It’s a week of respite for them, which is very hard to get these days.”
The race is organised in conjunction with Cahersiveen Rowing Club, and five boats – with 12 female rowers on each – took part this time around. The home club and Cromane missed out on the podium – Sive won from Ballinskelligs, with Valentia third – but in an event such as this, it really is the taking part that counts, and Group 135 was very grateful to all who took to the water.
“We missed it for a few years, but it’s back now, and we had a great race,” Denis added.
If a member of your family would be interested in the trip to Lourdes, contact Denis at (087) 261 2034.
