Those of state pension age can claim Attendance Allowance if they need financial support due to a long-term health condition or disability. The most someone can get from the benefit payment is £370 a month and someone is eligible if they “have a physical disability, a mental disability (including learning difficulties), or both”, according to the DWP. Claimants must have required help for at least six months to be eligible for Attendance Allowance before they apply.

How much money someone gets from Attendance Allowance is dependent on the “severity” of their condition.

The benefit payment is paid at two different rates, one higher and the other lower, which are awarded depending on the DWP’s assessment.

State pensioners will be able to claim £92.40 a week if they are eligible for the higher amount or £61.85 if they are entitled to the lower rate.

An older person who is suffering from a severe health condition or illness would get £369.60 a month from Attendance Allowance.

Payments for Attendance Allowance will be paid directly into the person’s bank or building society account.

Any extra money received from the benefit does not cover a pensioner’s mobility costs.

Those interested in this support can apply for Attendance Allowance by calling the benefit payment helpline on 0800 731 0122.

Alternatively, future applicants can download a claim form for the payment on the GOV.UK website.

On the Age UK website, advice is provided to pensioners who are looking to put forward an application for Attendance Allowance.

The charity stated: “When filling out the form, be really clear about how your illness or disability affects your life and attach any supporting information, such as GP letters, your care plans, or prescription lists.

“Once you’ve submitted your form, the Department of Work and Pensions may contact you for more information or arrange a doctor visit.

“It’s a good idea to prepare for this visit by writing things down you think the doctor should know about.

State pension explained

“You’ll get a letter about whether or not you’ll get Attendance Allowance, how much, and from what date. If you’re not happy with the decision, you can appeal.”

Age UK also broke down specifically what state pensioners need to include in the form when applying for the DWP benefit.

These include describing any accidents or falls in detail, explaining the effects of all disabilities and health conditions, and how they interact with each other.

On top of this, applicants are encouraged to outline things that they struggle to do unaided, even if they have ways of getting around it.

If someone is doing an activity that takes longer than it would have done if they did not have a disability or condition, or if it’s difficult to do safely, Age UK believes this should be mentioned in the application.

Applicants should also focus on how frequently the Attendance Allowance applicant needs help or if they need to be reminded to do certain tasks.

An example of this is if an individual requires assistance in looking after their appearance or if someone needs help to check their clothes are clean after a meal.

Finally, Age UK reiterates the importance of providing the DWP with “plenty of information” so they can process someone’s Attendance Allowance claim, even if the applicant repeats themselves.
