Derby Pride: East 17 announced as headline act for this year's Markeaton Park event

Boyband East 17 have been signed up as the headline act for Derby Pride 2024, which will be held at Markeaton Park in September. It will be the second time in 12 months the band has appeared in the city, having taken part in last year’s Darley Park Weekender.

Derby Pride is a free annual event which celebrates LGBT+ culture and brings together the diverse communities within Derby and surrounding areas. It is a family-friendly event and open to all.

Announcing the headline act, the organisers said: “Derby Pride could no longer contain our excitement – we want to share it with you all. Derby Pride 2024 is pleased to announce that East 17 will perform for you all live on stage as the headline act.”

East 17, who achieved eighteen Top 20 singles and four Top 10 albums and became famous in the mid-90s for their “bad boy” image, will appear at the event on Saturday, September 17. A time for their performance has yet to be announced, but the event takes place from 12pm to 6pm.

The band, which formed in 1991 and are named after the postcode of their home area, Walthamstow, in London, are well-known for their 1994 Christmas hit Stay Another Day. The group continues today with the line-up of Terry Coldwell, from the original band, Joe Livermore since 2019, and former Artful Dodger collaborator Robbie Craig since 2014

As well as East 17, there will be other live music, acts, and DJs on the main stage which have still to be announced. There is always a vibrant market area featuring local LGBT+ owned and LGBT+ friendly small businesses, charities, and other organisations, offering support and information to the community; food and drink vendors; and a family area for kids of all ages.

The Kids Zone usually includes crafts, games, superhero story time and a bouncy castle. The whole event will be accompanied by a funfair.

Ahead of the 2023 event, a Pride spokesman said: “Derby Pride is a safe place for the LGBT+ community to celebrate being their true selves and to have a fun time, meeting friends old and new.”
