One thing became abundantly clear after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl 58 win over the 49ers this past weekend: Kansas City was far better prepared for the new overtime rules than San Francisco.

Multiple Niners players admitted that they didn’t even know about the new overtime rules after head coach Kyle Shanahan elected to receive the ball first in OT.

The Chiefs on the other hand knew exactly what was going on. Superstar tight end Travis Kelce credits statistical analysis coordinator Mike Frazier for getting the team ready for possible overtime scenarios.

“My guy Mike Frazier,” Kelce said this week’s episode of his New Heights podcast. “He’s the one that goes through all these scenarios, all these big-time situations, end of half, end of game, rule changes, he comes up and stands in front of the team, and when he comes in front of the team everyone yells, ‘Fraaaaz!’”

“He goes over these kinds of situations. I’m pretty sure we went over the overtime rules three times, four times in a two-week span,” Kelce added. “Every single week we talked about overtime rules in the playoffs and Frazier was up front, giving what we would do in all these scenarios. So everybody on the team, we knew exactly what the best situation was, how we were going to handle it, how we were going to attack it. And a guy like that, man, you don’t realize how big of a job it is to do that kind of stuff.”

The 49ers took the ball first in overtime, giving the Chiefs a chance to match or beat whatever score they put up. San Francisco settled for a field goal, setting up Patrick Mahomes and the KC offense for their game-winning touchdown drive.

“It’s Frazier coming up big,” Kelce said. “They’ve got to get a Frazier in San Fran.”
