13 incredible tennis records novak djokovic could break to add to his staggering collection

Novak Djokovic with the 2023 US Open trophy

Novak Djokovic already holds the majority of the most significant records in men’s tennis, but the legendary Serbian can still add to his dynasty before he calls time on his career.

The 36-year-old has won the most men’s Grand Slam titles (24), the most Masters 1000 titles (40), the most ATP Finals titles (seven) and has finished the most seasons as the ATP world No 1 (eight).

They are just a handful of the Serbian’s finest accomplishments and he reiterated last year that his sights are set on every milestone possible.

“I’m going for all possible records, all that I can break. I’ve never had a problem saying that,” the world No 1 told Serbian publication Kurir in November.

“And that may be why people don’t like me. I didn’t pretend to be someone — to say that it’s not my goal, and then to behave differently… I always tried to be in line with what I believe!”

Here are 13 tennis records Novak Djokovic could still break in his career.

ATP titles

American legend Jimmy Connors holds the record for the most ATP singles titles with a mammoth tally of 109, with Roger Federer second on 103 and Djokovic third on 98.

Winning 12 more tournaments to surpass Connors is not guaranteed given Djokovic will turn 37 in May, but the Serbian will have a strong chance of achieving this if he plays for another two to three seasons. Djokovic won seven titles from just 12 events in his brilliant 2023 season.

Wimbledon men’s titles

Djokovic’s great rival Roger Federer, who retired from the sport in 2022, tops the list for the most Wimbledon men’s singles titles of all time with his eight triumphs.

The Serbian is just one behind Federer on seven titles and it would be surprising if he did not at least equal the Swiss’ record, given he has won four of the last five editions of the Wimbledon Championships.

US Open men’s titles

Connors, Pete Sampras and Federer share the record for the most titles at the US Open in the Open Era with five victories apiece.

Djokovic needs one more titles to match this trio of greats, having secured his fourth US Open title in 2023 — his first triumph at Flushing Meadows since 2018. The 36-year-old holds the Open Era record for the most US Open finals reached with 10.

Oldest Grand Slam champion

If Djokovic were to claim his fifth US Open crown at the 2024 edition of the New York major, he would become the oldest Grand Slam singles champion in tennis history.

Australian legend Ken Rosewall currently holds the record, having won the 1972 Australian Open at the age of 37 years, 1 month and 24 days.

Oldest ATP world No 1

Federer is the oldest player to ever hold the ATP world No 1 ranking, having last occupied top spot on Jun 24, 2018 when he was 36 years, 320 days.

Djokovic can break this record during April this year if he can hold onto the world No 1 position. He currently holds a 600 point lead over world No 2 Carlos Alcaraz.

Defending all four Grand Slams titles

Djokovic could become the first male player to successfully defend the title at all four Grand Slam tournaments if he defends his French Open and US Open crowns this season.

The Serbian has already defended the titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon on multiple occasions, but is looking for consecutive victories at the other two majors for the first time.

Federer is the only man to defend titles at three of the four majors, having achieved this at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Indian Wells titles

Federer and Djokovic both top the list for the most titles in the history of the Indian Wells Masters, an event founded in 1974, with six.

Djokovic could overtake his Swiss adversary by winning a seventh title next month as he is set to make his first appearance at the Masters 1000 event since 2019.

Miami Open titles

Djokovic shares the record for the most titles at the Miami Open with American icon Andre Agassi, having triumphed six times at the tournament which was first held in 1985.

Like Indian Wells, the Serbian has not played in Miami since 2019, but could surpass the tally of his former coach Agassi this year as he is set to make his return.

Grand Slam tournament appearances

Federer and Spanish favourite Feliciano Lopez are tied for the most appearances in Grand Slam tournaments, having each featured in 81 majors during their lengthy careers.

Djokovic and Richard Gasquet both currently sit next on this list with 73 major main draw appearances, with the Serbian likely to match or break this record if he is still playing two years from now.

Grand Slam quarter-finals

At the 2024 Australian Open, Djokovic equalled a record which was previously owned solely by Federer for the most Grand Slam quarter-finals reached with 58.

The world No 1 will almost certainly stand alone in this metric at some point this year — likely in his next major appearance at the French Open.

Grand Slam match wins

Djokovic has won 366 Grand Slam matches, a total which puts him just three behind Federer’s record tally of 369. This is, therefore, another milestone Djokovic will likely take from his Swiss rival in the near future.

Grand Slam matches

Like with match wins in majors, the world No 1 is closing in on Federer when it comes to matches played in Grand Slams.

After his run to the semi-final of last month’s Australian Open, the Serbian has now contested 415 matches in the sport’s four biggest tournaments, putting him 14 behind Federer, who has played 429.

Most Open Era match wins

Connors has won more total ATP matches than any other player with 1,274 and this will likely be the toughest of these records for Djokovic to break.

The 36-year-old has won 1,094 matches and it will be a very tall order to add another 180 to reach the American’s total, but there is a chance if he plays on for several more years.
