KUALA LUMPUR: Spanco Sdn Bhd managing director Tan Sri Robert Tan Hua Choon has pleaded not guilty to a charge of cheating and dishonesty linked to the procurement and management of the government’s vehicle fleet.

He claimed trial to the charge after it was read out before Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court Judge Suzana Hussin here on Wednesday (April 3).

For the charge, Tan is accused of cheating and inducing the Finance Ministry through the Public-Private Partnership Unit to award Spanco Sdn Bhd a contract to supply, repair and manage the government’s fleet of vehicles.

According to the charge sheet, the contract was worth RM3,966,386,628.

He allegedly committed the offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property at the ministry’s office between Feb 27 and Feb 28, 2019.

Spanco was awarded a contract worth RM4.5bil to procure and manage the government’s fleet of vehicles for a period of 15 years from 2022 to 2037.

In its probe into the contract, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recorded statements from several key witnesses, including a former finance minister.

Several individuals from the company were also called up for questioning while the MACC had also raided Tan’s house as well as the company’s offices.

The anti-graft body had also frozen several accounts believed to hold tens of millions of ringgit belonging to Tan.
