Nottinghamshire's best pizza place crowned as Pizzamisu in Nottingham city centre

Nottinghamshire has a vast choice when it comes to pizza, with a mix of national chains and locally-owned restaurants serving Neapolitan, Detroit, deep pan and thin crust. It’s no surprise that there were some strong contenders in Nottinghamshire Live’s poll to find the best.

The Rustic Crust in Farnsfield proved popular and so did Cornerstone Pizza in Sherwood. Slice ‘n’ Brew, in Forman Street, very narrowly missed out on top spot.

But the champion was Pizzamisu, the cosy and vibrant pizzeria that teleports customers to Naples as soon as they step inside the door. Fans say it’s the best pizza in Nottingham, with flavoursome toppings and deliciously light and tasty Neapolitan crusts, which have them coming back for more.

Co-owner Antonio Oriente said: “I would like to thank everybody that voted for us and it means a lot to us. It gives us that reward for the hard work we are doing every day. We are very, very happy, and thank Nottingham for this fantastic adventure they give to us.

“We try to offer the best service possible and the best pizza possible. We come from Naples and obviously for us it’s a sort of religion and we want to respect that. We work hard every day trying to replica the pizzas you eat in Naples.”

Inside Pizzamisu

Pizzamisu opened during the pandemic, starting with tables and chairs outside in High Pavement. The family-run business has grown and grown in popularity and is still performing strongly despite a raft of pizza chains – Rudy’s Pizza, Pizza Pilgrims and Pizza Punks – opening in the city centre.

“I think we have been a test of them – I think we were the first Neapolitan-style pizzeria in the city centre. I don’t think competition is something bad – it gives you the push to do better. People love pizza in Nottingham.

“We do well and I think the chains are working well so in the city pizza is something people appreciate and like,” said Antonio, who was a postman in Gedling and Carlton when the restaurant first opened. He later quit to focus on delivering first-class pizzas instead, along with his wife and their Italian friends Ferdinando Del Trionfo and his wife Maria.

Pizza crocchè at Pizzamisu

At Pizzamisu, the pizza oven is the first thing customers see as they step over the threshold before being led to the seating area that looks like a Naples street with T-shirts and socks pegged to washing lines overhead. To add to the authenticity, the artwork includes Neapolitan football photos and the front page news of Napoli winning the Serie A football league for the first time in 33 years in the 2022/23 season.

The menu is split into tomato bases and white bases (no tomato just cheese). Antonio said: “We recommend the four cheese without tomato as the acid will kill the taste of the cheese but it’s people’s choice. Some of the pizzas work better without the acidity of the tomato.”

A simple margherita is the best-seller but after that pizza lovers like a bit of heat, opting for the diavola or spicy ‘nduja. Newer additions to the menu are tuna and red onion, crocchè (crushed crispy potato croquettes) with ham and Nerano which has a green base of courgettes and mint cream.

When it comes to desserts, the homemade tirasmisu is the runaway winner, with the cream and chocolate rum baba a worthy runner-up.

Pizzamisu is certified by the True Neapolitan Pizza Association in recognition of its excellent traditional pizzas. The restaurant is also a sponsor to they can employ pizza chefs from Naples – a requirement after Brexit. They have sponsored one chef already and are in the process of sponsoring another because it’s so hard in Britain to find chefs qualified in the art of Neapolitan pizza-making.

Since opening, the rear patio is now heated so it can be used in the winter. “The pizzeria gets very popular and sometimes on a Friday and Saturday we have to turn people away which is obviously something we don’t like to do but thank god it’s happening,” said Antonio.
