Atlas Air Boeing cargo plane makes emergency landing at Miami
NEW DELHI: An Atlas Air Boeing cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport following an engine malfunction that occurred shortly after its takeoff. The incident, involving a Boeing 747-8, was reported late on Thursday.
Atlas Air confirmed in a statement that the aircraft’s crew adhered to standard procedures during the incident and successfully returned to Miami International Airport (MIA). The company also mentioned plans to conduct a thorough inspection to ascertain the cause of the malfunction.
Unverified footage circulating on social media platform X depicted flames emanating from the aircraft’s left wing during flight. However, the authenticity of these videos has yet to be confirmed.
Data from Flightaware identified the aircraft as a Boeing 747-8, equipped with four General Electric GEnx engines. In response to the situation, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was deployed, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries, as confirmed by airport authorities.
Requests for comments from Boeing, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and General Electric remained unanswered at the time of the report.
This event occurs amidst ongoing challenges for Boeing, particularly following a recent crisis involving an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 airliner. The MAX 9 had to make an emergency landing after part of its fuselage detached shortly after departing from Portland, Oregon, on January 5. This alarming incident led the FAA to temporarily ground 171 aircraft for safety inspections.
