The price of the Meta Quest 2 has been sliced by another £50, bringing the popular standalone VR headset down to just £249.99 for the 128GB model, and £299.99 for the 256GB model.

Launched in 2020, the second-generation Meta Quest was recently succeeded by the more advanced Meta Quest 3 (£479.99, Amazon.co.uk), but it’s still an immersive and capable headset. At £249.99, it’s now an unmissable bargain for anyone looking to dip their toe into seamless, cable-free virtual reality.

The newer model gets a faster processor, thinner design, better mixed reality passthrough and a sharper display, but both models play the same games and software, and both are still fully supported by Meta. That means, if you happen to fall utterly in love with VR gaming, you can carry over any games in your library to the Meta Quest 3, should you ever choose to upgrade.

The Meta Quest 2 has been priced at £299.99 ever since the newer model launched, so the saving isn’t quite as massive as Amazon’s listing suggests, but this is still an excellent deal on a great VR headset.

Securing the top spot in our review of the best VR headsets, we lauded the Meta Quest 2 as a “genuine breakthrough”. While it’s not the most technically advanced virtual-reality headset out there, it’s the first genuinely user-friendly one. “You don’t need an expensive gaming PC to plug it into, and there are no snaking cables to trip over. Instead, you just slip it on, grab hold of the controllers, and are immediately immersed in a believable 3D space,” said our reviewer.

It’s worth keeping in mind Amazon doesn’t actually stock any Meta Quest games – which would be the most obvious use for the bundled £50 gift card. PlayStation VR2: Was £529.99, now £509.99, Amazon.co.uk

If you already own a PlayStation 5, you should consider the PS VR2 as an alternative to the Meta Quest. The PS VR2 is wired into the console using a long cable, which is more restrictive than the wireless Meta Quest but enables the headset to produce much more believable and immersive graphics. The PS VR2 currently has £20 off at Amazon.

One of the best games on the Meta Quest 2, Superhot VR is a hyper-stylised first-person shooter that makes you feel like you’re starring in a John Woo movie. Every level is a short action scene in which you’re using guns, swords, pots and pans to defend yourself from assailants. Time slows to a crawl when you’re not moving, allowing you to dodge bullets and plan your counter-attacks.
