The Open Field: If the Seahawks draft a quarterback, who do you want?

the open field: if the seahawks draft a quarterback, who do you want?

The Seattle Seahawks have only drafted two quarterbacks under John Schneider’s tenure as general manager. Russell Wilson’s immediate success in 2012 substantially reduced the need to go QB hunting for the better part of a decade. Two-time USFL champion Alex McGough was the only other QB taken by Schneider, and he never made it to the active roster.

Seattle had opportunities in 2022 and 2023 to draft quarterbacks and bypassed both times. Geno Smith and Sam Howell’s contracts are both up after the 2025 season, and there is intrigue over whether or not Schneider will finally land a rookie QB in his first post-Pete Carroll year.

For today’s discussion, we’re asking which quarterback from this year’s class would you want the Seahawks to draft? There are obvious names out of Seattle’s reach, but I don’t want to put barriers on your respective imaginations. Theoretically speaking, if you absolutely want the Seahawks to somehow convince the Chicago Bears to give up their No. 1 pick to draft Caleb Williams then go right ahead.

Jayden Daniels is highly likely to be taken after Williams, Drake Maye may soon follow, and then you’re left with J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr, and Bo Nix as the next three quarterbacks whose placements within the draft are less clear. There’s been plenty of speculation over Penix to the Seahawks given the University of Washington connections and the fact that Ryan Grubb is Seattle’s offensive coordinator. Nix had a formal visit with the Seahawks a few days ago.

Getting deeper into the draft, Spencer Rattler has garnered considerable hype as a Day 2/Day 3 gem after reviving his college career at South Carolina, and he also met with Seattle. Other notable options outside of Round 1 include Tulane’s Michael Pratt, Tennessee’s Joe Milton, and Florida State’s Jordan Travis (who tore his ACL last December, it must be noted).
