Escanaba South Side was known as Jim’s South Side Grocery for 15 years.
ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – A long-standing convenience store reopened in Escanaba under new ownership.
Escanaba South Side was known as Jim’s South Side Grocery for 15 years. Tara and Dennis Derouin are the new owners. Former owner Jim Berthiaume had to sell the store after an employee embezzled money from the business.
Lorri Lamarche, a current employee, said Escanaba South Side opened Friday after being closed for six weeks.
“It feels so good. And the customers are so happy,” Lamarche said. “They come in, you know, this store has been around for a long time. And to see it go the way it did with the embezzlement and stuff, it was heartbreaking… I’m ready to put it all behind us and move forward.”
Lamarche said Jim still works at Escanaba South Side. The owners said it is good to be back open for the community.
