India To Launch UPI, RuPay Services In Sri Lanka And Mauritius Tomorrow; PM Modi To Attend Virtual Event
UPI Launch In Sri Lanka, Maldives: The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which is India’s homegrown instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, will be launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius at a virtual ceremony on Monday (February 12) that will be witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth, and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister’s Office informed on Sunday.
Simultaneously, RuPay card services will also be rolled out in Mauritius during the ceremony, the PMO added. The launch of UPI in the two countries in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) will enable the availability of settlement services via the widely popular mobile-based payment system for Indian nationals travelling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius, as well as for citizens of Mauritius travelling to India, the PMO said.
Meanwhile, the extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will enable local banks to issue cards based on the payment service system in the island nation and facilitate usage of RuPay cards for settlements both in India and at home. “India has emerged as a leader in Fintech innovation and Digital Public Infrastructure. Prime Minister has placed a strong emphasis on sharing our development experiences and innovation with partner countries,” PM Modi’s office said in a press release.
The communique added, “Given India’s robust cultural and people-to-people linkages with Sri Lanka and Mauritius, the launch will benefit a wide cross-section of people through a faster and seamless digital transaction experience and enhance digital connectivity between the countries.” Earlier this month, UPI was formally launched at the Eiffel Tower in the French capital of Paris. The launch took place during the 75th Republic Day reception ceremony organised by the Indian Embassy in France.
