‘I, Mallikarjun Kharge, will not…’: Congress chief on MP’s ‘separate country’ remark

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Friday that anyone, irrespective of which party, who speaks about splitting the country, will never be tolerated. His remark in Parliament was in response to his party MP DK Suresh’s controversial statement, in which he said there was no choice but to demand a “separate country” for South India, alleging Karnataka was not receiving adequate funds from the BJP-led Centre.

“If anyone speaks about breaking the country, we will never tolerate it. Irrespective of the party the person belongs to, whether it’s my party or someone else’s, I, Mallikarjun Kharge, will himself say that from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, we are one and we will be one,” the Congress President said in House on Friday.

DK Suresh made the controversial comment while reacting to the Union Interim Budget 2024-25 presented in Parliament on Thursday by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He said that “injustice was being served to South India”.

“Funds that were supposed to reach the South are getting diverted and distributed to North India,” he claimed.

BJP slammed the Congress for DK Suresh’s statement, with MP Tejasvi Surya saying the grand old party has a history of “Divide and Rule”.

“On one hand, their leader Rahul Gandhi is attempting to ‘unite’ the country with his ‘Jodo’ Yatras. On the other hand, we have an MP who is hell bent on breaking the nation. Congress’ idea of divide and rule is much worse than that followed by the colonisers,” Surya tweeted.

DK Suresh later took to X to clarify his remark, saying he only tried to bring to notice the “injustice in funds distribution” by the BJP-headed Centre, and that he is a “proud Indian and a proud Kannadiga”.
