Tidak perlu universiti wanita, kata kumpulan

Kebanyakan pelajar universiti awam di Malaysia terdiri adalah wanita.

PETALING JAYA: Satu kumpulan wanita menolak idea penubuhan universiti untuk kaum itu yang dicadangkan Barisan Nasional (BN) bagi dimasukkan dalam manifesto pilihan raya parti.

Pengarah operasi, Jaringan Inovatif Pemerkasaan Wanita, Junaida Hamid berkata, cadangan itu adalah sesuatu yang memecahbelahkan.

“Sekiranya mahukan kepelbagaian dan menyeluruh, lebih baik menubuhkan satu pusat kajian yang memfokuskan kepimpinan wanita dan diwakili semua peringkat di dalam universiti awam,” katanya kepada FMT.

Junaida berkata, ia mungkin bukan satu penggunaan sumber yang strategik di mana inklusiviti dan penjajaran adalah kunci utama menangani isu kepelbagaian.

“Lebih banyak kajian perlu dilakukan sebelum kita mula menggunakan duit pembayar cukai.

“Akhirnya kita bertanggungjawab kepada pembayar cukai untuk menjustifikasikan sesuatu pelaburan itu dan memastikan semua usaha membuahkan hasil,” katanya.

Katanya, banyak peluang yang sedia ada untuk wanita di negara ini tetapi ia perlu dipromosi dan dipasarkan.

Pada Rabu lalu, Naib Presiden Umno, Khaled Nordin berkata, universiti berkenaan akan menjadi pusat kajian untuk isu berkaitan wanita dan mempromosikan kepimpinan wanita.

Khaled yang dilantik ketua merangka manifesto BN berkata, idea itu dicadangkan oleh Wanita BN.

Bekas timbalan menteri pendidikan, Teo Nie Ching berkata, cadangan itu baik tetapi mempersoalkan mengapa universiti awam sedia ada tidak boleh memikul tugas menyelesaikan isu berkaitan wanita dan mempromosikan kepimpinan wanita.

“Walaupun terdapat banyak bidang di mana kita perlu meningkatkan perwakilan wanita, seperti dalam politik, apa yang kita lihat dalam pendidikan adalah jurang gender di mana lebih ramai wanita berbanding lelaki di universiti awam,” katanya kepada FMT.

Menurutnya, 61% pelajar di universiti awam adalah wanita.
