Leicester City’s January transfer window ended rather bleakly with Stefano Sensi’s move from Inter Milan failing to be completed after weeks of talks.
Failing to add another midfielder to Enzo Maresca’s squad has resulted in widespread frustration among supporters following another lacklustre transfer window by the club’s hierarchy. Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing of Stoke City has reinstated the fans’ backing on Maresca and with the Foxes 12 points clear of Leeds United in third, an instant return to the Premier League remains on the cards.
Plans are expected to be already in place for a recruitment strategy ahead of Leicester’s return to the top flight. With a number of players set to leave the club at the expiry of their contracts, Maresca’s squad will look completely different come August this year.
Minus Ryan Bertrand in 2021, Leicester haven’t dipped into the free agent market since Luis Hernandez joined in 2016. Amid all the Financial Fair Play concerns at Seagrave, there’s a number of players who could make the move to the King Power Stadium in the summer transfer window…
Josh Brownhill – Burnley
Linked with a move to Leicester in the past, Brownhill’s contract at Turf Moor is due to expire at the end of the season. The Clarets are believed to be ready to trigger a one-year option to keep the midfielder, but their top-flight uncertainty could be pivotal in their decision.
Brownhill was vital to Burnley’s return to the Premier League and he has been a mainstay in Vincent Kompany’s midfield this term. A player capable of playing deep, similar to Harry Winks, or further forward in the No.8 role, Brownhill would be some coup.
Lloyd Kelly – AFC Bournemouth
After seeing a £20million move to Tottenham turned down at the end of the summer transfer window, Kelly remains at the Vitality Stadium. However, he has reportedly rejected a number of contract offers by the Cherries and will become available at the end of the season.
With over 30 appearances in the Premier League, the English defender is capable of playing at centre-back as well as left-back. Left-footed defenders are premium in today’s game and he would be a welcomed addition to Maresca’s backline.
Stefano Sensi of Inter Milan
Stefano Sensi – Inter Milan
This one just makes sense. Sensi’s failed move to Leicester last month meant the club avoided paying a high loan fee but the midfielder is due to become a free agent at the end of the season.
Sensi has only made three Serie A appearances this season and has been an unused substitute in each of their last seven games. Leicester would be foolish to not revisit the situation at the end of the campaign.
Kasper Schmeichel – Anderlecht
A surprise inclusion on this list but Schmeichel will be available on a free this summer. Having only joined Anderlecht on a one-year deal last summer, the Leicester legend could put an end to his impressive career with one final season with the club.
Mads Hermandsen is, and will, be Maresca’s number one next season. Jakub Stolarczyk, now 23, deserves first team football so could be loaned out and Danny Ward will be one of the players put up for sale, once again. Schmeichel providing competition and support to his Danish counterpart could be beneficial for all included.
Daniele Rugani – Juventus
Juventus centre-back Rugani was linked with a move to Leicester back in 2019. The Italian giants were said to be keen on selling the then-out-of favour defender but a move never happened.
He has since become more of a regular in Turin, but Bremer, Danilo and Federico Gatti have been preferred this term. Rugani, who has made seven appearances for Italy, could decide to seek a new challenge and Leicester could be a smart choice.
