winter storm causes problems on interstates, main roads and side roads

Traffic is at a standstill on I-83 in York County.

Heavy snow has shut down stretches of two South-Central Pennsylvania interstates this morning as a winter storm blows through the area.

Pennsylvania State Police say the northbound lanes of I-81 are shut down at mile marker 29 in Southampton Township in Cumberland County. PSP Trooper Megan Frazer said multiple vehicles are stuck. Driver are advised to avoid the area. It’s not yet known when the stretch of road will reopen.

PennDOT says southbound I-83 is closed at Reesers Summit in York County. While northbound has reopened, there are very long backlogs.

A PennDOT official said their trucks weren’t able to access the hill to treat it because commercial vehicles were unable to get out of the way. PennDOT had to reroute plows to come in at Exit 39A to back down the hill while salting.
