DA’s dynamic TV election ignites voter engagement, advocates power of each ballot

As South Africa approaches the 2024 elections, the DA has launched a television advertisement as part of its campaign to “rescue South Africa”.

The advertisement was launched at the Victory Theatre in Johannesburg on April 11.

With a brief yet powerful message, the DA’s TV spot emphasises the critical role of voters in determining South Africa’s future. The advertisement aims to motivate citizens to understand the power of their democratic rights by remembering previous victories won by the narrowest of margins.

According to DA Leader John Steenhuisen, the advertisement draws attention to the party’s history of delivering effective, accountable governance in municipalities across the country.

“From the City of Cape Town to uMngeni, the DA showcases instances where its leadership has transformed communities for the better, often winning elections by the narrowest of margins.

“In this election, the DA is prepared to save South Africa, but many people forget the provinces and municipalities we have already rescued, frequently obtaining a majority or a new coalition government by the smallest of margins.

With a succinct yet powerful message, the DA’s TV spot underscores the pivotal role of voters in steering the course of South Africa’s future. By recounting past victories secured by the slimmest of margins, the advertisement seeks to inspire citizens to recognize the potency of their democratic rights.

“This is a journey we have already travelled with millions of South African voters who have put the power of their vote to tremendously good use by placing their trust in the DA. This journey bears testament to the power of the citizens’ vote, down to the very last ballot paper cast.

“The message of our first TV election ad is simple: it reminds South Africans of the power of their vote and the responsibility to use that power to bring about the change millions of our citizens so desperately want.

Despite its significant accomplishments, the DA’s ascent to power has been marked by persistence, determination, and victories won by the narrowest of margins. Reflecting on its trajectory over the past two decades offers valuable insights into the party’s growth and the transformative power of each individual vote.

“In 2006, the DA achieved a historic victory in the City of Cape Town with just one vote, and in 2021, the DA won uMngeni with just 44 votes, a milestone that epitomises the essence of democracy.”

Steenhuisen added that both of these municipalities are now shining examples of governance excellence in South Africa, alongside the likes of DA-run Midvaal in Gauteng and DA-run Kouga in the Eastern Cape — both the best-run municipalities in their respective provinces.

“… message that we are bringing to South Africans in our first election advertisement is thus very simple: ‘your vote counts’.South Africans who are fed up with the state of our country under the ANC should not let their despair make them believe that their vote has lost power. If anything, now more than ever, our votes are the single most powerful tool we have to ‘rescue South Africa’.

“There is so much for South Africans to be excited about as we take to the polls on May 29. As the ANC loses its majority for the first time in 30 years, the opportunity for a new government of hope and change is finally within sight. Where the DA has won governments and changed the lives of residents for the better, our outright majorities and coalitions of hope have all come down to just a few votes. So in this election, the stakes are far too high for any South African to stay home, and citizens must remember that every single vote will count,” said Steenhuisen.
