Jeff German, 69, was stabbed to death outside his Las Vegas home on September 2A medical analysis of the coroner's report indicates that due to a stab wound in his carotid artery, he died quicklyHis body was likely not discovered until at least 24 hours after his killing as it was already progressing out of the rigor mortis stageFormer Clark County public administrator Robert Telles was arrested last month in connection with the murder - he appeared in court this week

Las Vegas journalist Jeff German, who was stabbed to death last month, likely died quickly due to stab wounds in his neck and torso, according to a medical review of his autopsy.

German died with four sharp force injuries in his neck, including one in his carotid artery.

Dr. Dale Carrison, who reviewed a portion of the coroner’s report for the Las Vegas Journal-Review, said an injury to the carotid artery results in a fast death.

‘That would be a fatal injury. He would be dead within several minutes,’ Carrison, who used to reach emergency medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno and is a former FBI agent, said.

Carrison added that the investigator’s report on German’s killing said, ‘rigor mortis was passing,’ meaning the journalist would have been dead for at least 24 hours before being found, because that is the minimum time it takes for a body to finish the rigor mortis stage.

‘It’s usually present for 24 hours, and then it does go away,’ he said. ‘He definitely would have had to have been lying out there for a significant period of time.’

Telles was arrested in connection with the murder

Jeff German, 69, was found dead with seven stab wounds in his neck and torso at about 10.30am on September 3 outside his home near near North Tenaya Way in Las Vegas.

He was pronounced dead at 12:55pm on September 3 after a neighbor discovered him lying behind the shrubs in his side yard.

Former Clark County public administrator Robert Telles was arrested in connection with the death after police discovered that DNA on Telles’ clothing matched DNA evidence under German’s fingernails.

Detectives have since matched a straw hat and sneakers worn by the suspect to a torn up hat and shoes found in Telles’ Peccole Ranch home.

The shoes were found behind a couch in the living room, and the torn up hat in the garage.

Las Vegas police officers and prosecutors said Telles was ‘lying in wait’ when he attacked German outside his suburban residence.

German had previously written stories critical of Telles’ handling of his public office.

In September, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said that video of the stabbing had been recovered, but the tape needed to be clarified because it was ‘distorted.’

It was sent to the FBI with hopes that it could be enhanced and Lombardo said they were planning to release its content, though, of Friday, it was not clear when.

Telles is currently under protective custody inside the Clark County Detention Center due to the high-profile nature of the crime he was arrested in connection with.

The Vegas police has not yet located a murder weapon for the grizzly stabbing.

Metro Captain Dori Koren and Sheriff Lombardo told the Review-Journal, for which German worked until the time of his murder, that they are not investigating any other suspects at the time.

German was known for his stories about government malfeasance and political scandals and coverage of the 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival, during which 60 people were killed and 400 were wounded.

He held a master’s degree from Marquette University and was the author of the 2001 true-crime book ‘Murder in Sin City: The Death of a Las Vegas Casino Boss,’ the story of the death of Ted Binion, heir to the Horseshoe Club fortune.

Cathy Scott, a former colleague, recalled that she and German broke the story of the killing of Las Vegas mafia associate Herbert ‘Fat Herbie’ Blitzstein in 1997.

German specialized in stories about organized crime. He hosted a season of the Review-Journal’s true crime podcast, ‘Mobbed Up: The Fight for Vegas.’

The podcast was described as a sketched of the secret power mafia crime families weld over more than a third of the Strip’s casinos, and the enormous job federal and state agents have in pushing them out.

He also broke stories about government corruption and campaign finance violations in Nevada.
