Hurricane Ian hit the southwest coast of Florida last night in what is being described as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the US.

The category 4 storm saw winds of up to 150mph (241kph), knocking out power to about 1.8m homes and causing widespread damage.

Torrential rain is expected across a broad area including Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville in the state’s northeast corner and residents have been warned to expect “widespread, life-threatening catastrophic flooding”.
