Water supply unstable in multiple eThekwini areas: Restoration underway
The eThekwini Municipality relentlessly addresses the unstable water situation affecting numerous areas reliant on the South Coast Augmentation (SCA) pipeline.
These regions have been grappling with the repercussions of an unstable water supply. The instability stems from challenges faced by the SCA pipeline.
Following extensive repairs on a section of the 1200mm diameter SCA steel trunk main, necessitated by damage inflicted during heavy rainfall, the system has been struggling to regain its footing.
Municipality tackles unstable water crisis
Furthermore, the municipality acknowledges the gravity of the unstable water situation and has embarked on a proactive course of action to rectify it.
Central to their strategy is the meticulous management of water storage at key reservoirs, particularly Woodlands 3 and 4 Reservoirs.
Moreover, the municipality aims to bolster storage levels to solve the unstable water supply crisis. This involves implementing measures to regulate demand at the SCA pump station. This includes rationing supply to different reservoirs and selectively deactivating booster pump stations.
Additionally, this approach has yielded promising results, with levels at Woodlands 3 and 4 Reservoirs experiencing a significant improvement, climbing from emptiness to a current capacity of 30%.
However, the ultimate goal remains to achieve a storage capacity of 80%. Thereby ensuring sustained pumping to the Amanzimtoti Waterworks to mitigate the unstable water supply situation.
“The city aims to reach 80% storage levels to be able to maintain pumping to the Amanzimtoti Waterworks to supply all dependent reservoirs that are located downstream from the Waterworks,” the municipality said.
Affected areas
The impact of the water crisis extends across numerous areas, including Amanzimtoti CBD, Almond, Kingsburgh, Doonside, Illovo Beach, Panorama Park, Umgababa, Mgobhozini, Mfume, KwaSoni, Nkwali, Lovu, Bhekulwandle, KwaMakhutha, Mkhazini, Ezimbokodweni, KwaFakazi, KwaMgendwa, Mahlathini, Ohlongeni, eKuphileni, Adams Mission, Umnini, Danganyana, Magabheni, Dlambula, Ehlanzeni, Thoyane, Umkomaas, Clansthal, Craigeburn, Amahlongwa, Amalundi, Crowder Farm, Malukazi, and Scottburgh.
As the municipality continues its endeavors to mitigate the unstable water crisis, the City urges residents to conserve water.
