Flood alerts announced for Nottingham as weather turns again

flood alerts announced for nottingham as weather turns again

The River Leen at Bulwell is one of the places liable to flood tomorrow (February 9)

Flooding could occur again in some Nottinghamshire villages after the government announced several flood alerts for rivers in the county. The River Maun, the River Leen, the Riven Meden and tributaries of the River Trent have all been earmarked as places where flooding is possible for the next 24-36 hours.

The Day Brook near Daybrook and the Tottle Brook in Wollaton are also areas of concern. Those living close to any of the water points are asked to be prepared – although it’s not certain that flooding will occur.

Water levels are rising at the Bulwell river gauge for the River Leen as a result of heavy rainfall and as a result, flooding of roads and farmland is possible from between 2am tonight until tomorrow evening (Friday, February 9). For the River Maun, river levels are forecast to rise at the Whitewater Bridge river gauge.

Flooding of roads and farmland is “expected”, says the government’s “Check for Flooding” service. Areas most at risk are low-lying agricultural land and roads around Mansfield, the Sherwood Forest Caravan Park at Clipstone, Edwinstowe, Ollerton, Whitewater Lane at Whitewater Bridge and West Drayton.

River levels are expected to remain high for a couple of days. Consequently, the flooding could last until Saturday (February 10), unlike the River Leen.

The Church Warsop gauge river levels are rising also, in the River Meden around Church Warsop, Meden Vale and Budby. Flooding is possible from 6am tomorrow (Friday, February 9) until Saturday morning.

The River Trent’s tributaries are highest around Lowdham Grange river gauge. Tributatires included are River Greet, Potwell Dyke, Dover Beck, Cocker Beck, Woodborough Brook, Ouse Dyke, Thurgarton Beck and others.

Flooding is expected to have subsided by the end of today (February 8). Incident response staff are patrolling watercourses and “closely monitoring the situation” in each area.

It comes as the weather turns again after a brief spell of warm weather across the country. Temperatures of between 10C and 14C were being felt in Nottingham and nearby as recently as last week.

But forecasters had long expected a period of cold to return and today, certain areas experienced their first taste of snow of the year. It has quickly made way for rain, though, and there is a heavy chance of precipiation every day until Monday.

That includes, according to weather forecasts, an 80% maximum chance of rain currently for tomorrow, February 9, a 69% chance high for Saturday, February 10, a 57% maximum chance for Sunday, February 11 and a 69% maximum chance for Monday, February 12. Temperatures are forecast to warm up again though, with a high of between 8C and 11C forecast for the next few days.
