Carl Pei says AI will change everything in 5 years, hopes Nothing will still be going strong

AI is currently a hot topic in the tech industry. Be it big names like Google, Microsoft, or smartphone-centric companies like Nothing, everyone is planning their future around AI. And why not? Within the last two years, there has been a drastic transformation in gadgets, with every device and service now coming with AI label attached to it. In future this is only going to increase, or so believes Nothing founder Carl Pei. In an interview, he said that AI is set to transform the tech industry in the next 5 years.Â

Pei, who is also familiar to Indian phone users and tech enthusiasts as OnePlus co-founder, says big changes are coming to the way we use technology due to AI. And in the same interview he hoped that even as tech landscape changes in the next 5 years, his company Nothing would continue to be around and would drive some of these changes.Â

Talking about the competition and the future of Nothing, Carl Pei, in an interview with Carlos from Mexico, shared his views. In the video interview, Pei answered on how he was planning to keep up with the competition. He shared that competition was always there and that the industries always go through cycles where new, stronger players tend to overtake the reigning ones. “There used to be other players who were really important, like Nokia and Blackberry. They were unstoppable before, but then they got overtaken by Apple and Google in this cycle,” says Pei.

However, for Nothing, he believes more than any company, the cycle of change will be brought by Gen AI. And with the AI transformation, new players will come, giving strong competition. “And very soon, I think we’re going to enter a new cycle with AI or Gen AI. And I think there will be new players that are going to emerge. And maybe one day, if we’re lucky, we’re the ones that have to look behind our backs and not get overtaken,” said Pei.Â

Talking more about the brand’s planning and furniture in the next 5 years, Pei asserted that while no one could foresee the future, one thing was eminent: in the next five years, AI would change everything. And he hoped that Nothing would stay strong with the changing times. “It’s really hard to foresee even what’s going to happen in the next 18 months. So, in 5 years, I don’t know, I think AI will change the way we live our lives. It will change society, and I hope that in five years from now, we can still have a place,” he said.

For how Nothing will keep up with the AI race. Carl Pei states that Nothing is entirely focused on catching up with the AI competition. Currently, users are comparing their phones with Samsung or other brands that offer AI features. So the first priority for the brand is to catch-up, ensuring that “when users compare our phones, they don’t feel like Nothing lacks AI while Galaxy offers it, leading them to choose Galaxy.”

However, more than AI, the major challenge for Nothing, according to Pei, at present is to figure out how to change the way people use their phones for the better. With the future Nothing phones, Pei wants to offer users a more seamless user experience, where the operating system (OS) and apps integrate more fluidly. He proposes that the OS should possess a higher level of awareness of the devices a user owns and be capable of adapting the user interface (UI) accordingly. “The OS should sit above all devices, aware of the devices you currently possess, and then generate the UI based on your available resources. All your devices, including audio devices, phones, and other forms, should be interconnected,” said Pei.Â
