Stars Wars icon Mark Hamill delights fans as he poses with Queen Amidala actress Natalie Portman at 2024 Golden Globes: 'Now I have finally met my mother!'

Star Wars icon Mark Hamill delighted fans as he posed with his onscreen mother Natalie Portman at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

The actor, 72, who played Jedi Luke Skywalker in six Star War films, quipped he had ‘finally met his “mother”‘ as he met Portman, 42, backstage – who played Luke and Princess Leia’s mother Queen Padmé Amidala in the three Star Wars prequels.

Hamill looked dapper in a black velvet blazer, shirt and tie, while Portman – who was nominated in the Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category for May December – wowed in a  glittering sequin dress.

Mark first burst on to screens as Luke Skywalker in the 1977 original film, before reprising his roles in five further films; 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, 1883’s Return of the Jedi, 2015’s The Force Awakens, 2017’s The Last Jedi, last starring as the character in 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Portman was just a teen when the first of the trilogy, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace hit cinemas in 1999, with sequels Attack of the Clones and The Revenge of the Sith later released.

She starred alongside Hayden Christensen who played her doomed love, Anakin Skywalker, who would fall to the Dark Side and become Darth Vader.

Unlike their legendary predecessors, the prequel films were panned by critics and fans alike, after it failed to live up to expectations.

It was also slated for poor use of CGI and for the unlikable comedic alien, Jar Jar Binks.

Despite the films being panned, the backlash didn’t affect Natalie’s career, with the Hollywood star going on to appear in a number of hit films including Black Swan, Thor, Jackie and Vox Lux.

Last year Hamill revealed that he sees no ‘reason’ to portray Luke Skywalker again, but remains open to returning to the role during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning.

The star spoke with CBS News Sunday Morning correspondent Tracy Smith, saying: ‘I had my time, and that’s good,’ Hamill said of playing the Force-enabled hero. ‘But that’s enough.’

‘So, even though you say you won’t go back, there’s always a chance that you could go back?,’ Smith asked.

‘Well, you never say never. I just don’t see any reason to. Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore,’ Hamill answered.

‘You know that a lot of people out there would argue, ”They always need Luke”,’ Smith said, prompting Hamill to laugh.

Smith also asked if he had accepted being forever associated as Luke Skywalker.

‘Yeah. Well, I don’t care,’ Hamill said. ‘I mean, the truth of the matter is, I never really expected to be remembered for anything. I just wanted to make a living doing what I liked. And I thought, ”Well, it could be worse. I could be, like, known as being the best actor who ever played Adolf Hitler, you know?” At least Luke is an admirable fellow!’
