Da'Vine Joy Randolph reveals she 'arrested' Meryl Streep as the star discusses working with the legendary actress

Da’Vine Joy Randolph has revealed she was over the moon to star alongside Meryl Streep in the upcoming series of Only Murders In The Building.

The Hulu series created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman follows three strangers who bond over their shared interest in true crime podcasts.

Da’Vine, 37, stars as Detective Williams in the comedy-mystery series and she was delighted to arrest Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep in the latest series.

Appearing on an episode of The Graham Norton show set to air on Friday, Da’Vine spoke about working with the legendary actress.

‘When I found out she was going to be in it I begged and was like, “Please god I want just one scene with her,” and it happened. I get to arrest her! She is so amazing.’

The star’s latest role sees her play Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne’s new comedy The Holdover. 

Speaking about the role she said: ‘I’m from Philadelphia and have spent a lot of time in New York so I had to have a dialect coach. 

‘I had to work on it to find not only a Boston accent, but one of the 60s and 70s, and then that of an African American. It was hard so I listened to a lot of interviews, in particular those of Donna Summer.’

Yet it seems the actress got the accent spot on after she bagged the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. 

Da’Vine gave a shout out to the ‘incredible’ women in her life as she accepted the award and was greeted by cheers from the A-list attendees as she took to the stage at The Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.

While cradling the award in the crook of her arm, the star pulled out a piece of paper with a speech that she had penned shortly before the ceremony.

At one point, she shed the spotlight onto the women in her life that have helped her be where she is today. ‘To play a woman that is so many things to see themselves as a gift.’

‘And I want to have a moment to thank the incredible women in my life who have made me the artist I am today.’

Da’Vine was joined by actors Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal and Kingsley Ben-Adir as well as rock band The Last Dinner Party during the BBC chat show

Da’Vine continued, ‘I thank my mother, for teaching me that hard work and tenacity pays off.’

‘My Aunt Shirley, who taught me how to be fabulous. My Aunt Gwenny for teaching me how to tell the perfect joke.’

‘Thank you to the teachers who have guided me through the years, and especially thanks to the women in the industry who have fiercely supported me. Thank you so much!’

Also during her speech, Da’Vine took time to pay a tribute to the other women who were nominated in the same category, including Julianne Moore, Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks and America Ferrera.

‘To my fellow nominees, you worked continuously to push the bounds what it is in this medium. And I’m so honored to be considered amongst you.’

Da’Vine also took home the coveted first win of the night at the Golden Globes in the Female Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for her work in The Holdovers.
