‘Wicked’: The trailer of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande starrer is all things magical
Amid a sea of red during the 2024 Super Bowl, there was a sprinkle of emerald green magic as the makers dropped the first trailer for the much-anticipated ‘Wicked.’ The trailer, unveiled on Sunday, offered an enchanting glimpse into the world of Oz, captivating audiences with its star-studded cast and a powerful musical preview.
Based on the 2003 Broadway musical, which drew inspiration from Gregory Maguire’s novel, the film delves into the backstory of the Witches of Oz. Cynthia Erivo takes on the role of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, while Ariana Grande portrays Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North. The narrative weaves through their unlikely friendship as schoolmates, navigating adulthood with political strife and a love triangle involving school heartthrob Fiyero, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey.
The first trailer not only showcases the impeccable cast but also treats the audience to a spine-tingling rendition of the iconic song ‘Defying Gravity’ by Cynthia Erivo. The teaser captures the essence of the story, with Erivo’s powerful vocals accompanying a breathtaking scene of Elphaba making a daring leap from a high-tower window, soaring into the sky on her broomstick.
This teaser serves as the public’s first glimpse into the world of ‘Wicked.’ Last spring, the makers provided an initial preview at CinemaCon, featuring roughly edited footage. The snippet introduced major characters and highlighted Michelle Yeoh’s portrayal of Madame Morrible, guiding Elphaba in harnessing her powers.
Director Jon M. Chu teased the film’s magical aspects, assuring audiences that no CGI or blue screen was utilized, creating a fully immersive experience. The Emerald City, he emphasized, is a world that can only come to life on the big screen.
Production faced delays in 2023 due to Hollywood strikes, but the wait seems worth it as the teaser unveils a closer look at the meticulously crafted world of ‘Wicked.’ The three leads, Erivo, Grande, and Bailey, shared glimpses of their characters on social media as they celebrated the completion of filming in January.
