Piolo Pascual bags second best actor award for ‘Mallari’

Piolo Pascual is not yet done receiving recognition for his performance in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2023 entry “Mallari,” as he secured another Best Actor win, this time from the recently concluded Box-Office Entertainment Awards of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation (GMMSF), Inc.

Pascual’s second victory came after his first recognition from the inaugural Manila International Film Festival (MIFF), held last January in Hollywood. He tied with Dingdong Dantes (Rewind) for the Best Actor nod.

During the MMFF 2023, “Mallari” was one of the top-grossing films, and Pascual’s performance as Fr. Juan Severino Mallari, the first documented serial killer in the country, received acclaim as it shows three different personas from three different timelines. “Mallari” is also the first-ever Filipino movie to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Just recently, “Mallari” dominated the FAMAS 2024 nominations as it secured 14 nominations out of 18, which also includes Pascual on the roster and a possibly third win for Best Actor.

Meanwhile, Mentorque Productions is already planning ahead for their 2024 entry to the MMFF, the fantasy-drama “Biringan,” which is expected to continue the critical success of “Mallari.”

The film producer Bryan Dy said in March that with “Biringan,” they intend to cater to the audience of “Mallari,” who might see the same appeal but be different at the same time.

“We wanted to have our own track, ‘yung Mentorque. Gusto namin ‘yung niche ng ‘Mallari,’ ‘yung market nung ‘Mallari’ kasi merong gano’n e, gusto ng thrill,” he said, yet adding that the upcoming film is not a horror movie.

Dy also shared that they have already chosen the cast members for the project, although they have yet to sign a contract.

“Biringan” is about an “invisible city said to exist in the realms between the physical and the spiritual.” More details about the film are expected to be revealed soon, including its director.
