Scotland women's boss claims his views 'don't matter' when it comes to pro-Palestine protests outside Hampden for Israel game

Scotland manager Pedro Martinez Losa has insisted that ‘his views don’t matter’ as he prepares to take the women’s national team into a European Championship double header against Israel.

The Spaniard was asked how he feels about pro-Palestinian protests expected to take place outside Hampden when the teams clash on May 31.

‘That is an aspect we cannot control,’ he said. ‘It does not matter what your personal view is, there is a job to do in terms of being focused and trying to qualify for the Euros.

‘As a head coach, I am not in control of these circumstances. We have been put in a position where UEFA have said we have to play these games.

‘Whether I’m comfortable or not from my personal view doesn’t matter, the job has to be done for Scotland and I remain focused on that.’

The SFA have already moved to place restrictions on access to Hampden for the game, with only Scotland supporters’ club members or those who have gone to any of Scotland women’s past four home matches in a position to buy tickets.

The return leg will take place four days later at the BSC stadium in Budapest, with the fixture having to be moved from Israel because of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Martinez Losa is keen to ensure that the anticipated demonstrations outside Hampden do no distract from the game.

He said: ‘We will discuss the disruptions of restricted tickets and venue changes with the leadership group and staff to make sure players are protected.

‘We were excited to have a Friday night game but there have had to be a lot of conversations with embassies and UEFA and different departments. We just have to try and focus on our job within all of that.’

Scotland have taken four points from their opening two games - after a 0-0 draw in Serbia and 1-0 home win over Slovakia - and Martinez Losa is targeting six from the double header. That would take his team within touching distance of securing a play-off place - and could possibly confirm it depending on other results.

Martinez Losa insisted that his squad are all on the same wavelength after their victory over Slovakia ended a dismal eight-game sequence without a competitive win.

‘I had a text from Erin [Cuthbert] only recently to say that it is a dream to get back to the Euros with Scotland,’ he said.

‘From the outside it might not be possible to perceive it, but there are conversations all the time with players and constant feedback.

‘We cannot doubt the motivation and the pride that the players have to represent Scotland.

‘They are aware of the level we want to get to - and they are aware where we have to improve - but there has never been a single part of what we are trying to do that they have not bought into.

‘This is one of these camps that will hopefully give us a feeling of going in the right direction and going a step closer to what we want to achieve.’
