Hip-hop star Macklemore ends Australian tour at HBF Stadium on Tuesday in school night spectacular

Grammy award-winning artist Macklemore popped his final tag in Australia on Tuesday in a school night spectacular that’ll live long in the hearts of hip-hop fans and their mums.

After playing his first sold-out show at HBF Stadium on Monday, the 40-year-old backed it up with a second all-ages gig to tie up his string of East Coast and New Zealand shows this month.

Bursting onto the scene in 2012 with his hit Thrift Shop featuring Ryan Lewis, the high-energy performer has been on the radars of partyers and radio stations for more than a decade due to his often catchy, always resonant tunes.

With several Aussie tours under his sparkling yet re-homed belt, a new generation of fans had clearly sparked somewhat of a rebirth in him.

Fellow Seattle native Nick Beeba warmed up the 4,500-strong crowd with club bangers, but like a steaming tea left un-sipped, a 30-minute cooling off period before the Mack stormed the stage fell a little flat.

Fortunately, when the main event turned up with his dance and supporting posse — he TURNED UP — appearing every inch a world-class artist of 13 billion online streams and counting.

Bucking the trend of big-name performers dodging Perth for the alluring shores of the East Coast, the crowd-pleaser claimed to have left his best for the West.

In a salute to Australia, he kicked off his final Perth pomp with Aussie artist Tones and I to perform CHANT — a tune they co-released in 2022.

Her untamed blonde mane and blue tracksuit shadowed his flailing arms and fast-moving feet to confirm blondes do indeed have more fun. At least on stage.

Macklemore — whose real name is Ben Haggerty — then welcomed locals to the final night of his Ben tour in Australia which coincided with his 2023 album release of the same name.

“End of an era, end of a chapter. And I’m so grateful that we get to spend it together here,” he told fans.

His opening monologue transitioned from emotional to physical swiftly, giving the audience two directives — though one they’d struggle to obey.

“We came here to sweat, we came to dance... and to turn the f*** up!” he cried.

The charismatic artist instructed fans to “take a couple pictures, take a couple videos,” and quickly shut their phones off to be fully immersed in the experience.

Then he dropped his Triple J Hottest 100 winner Thrift Shop like a tonne of bargain basement bricks.

Donning that famous fur coat in a blast from the past, the arena roof may have blown clean off were it not appropriately welded on as the crowd reached fever pitch.

Famed classics Downtown and Glorious got an expected run and didn’t disappoint.

Vocal both on the stage and off, the rapper proudly belted out his 2024 pro-Palestine release Hind’s Hall which has become a regular addition to recent shows.

Another strongly themed tune in Same Love was well-received, spreading love and inclusivity to those marginalised by marriage inequality or gender discrimination.

Picking the crowd back up, the man who enjoys bringing people together scouted the audience for two confident movers in an old-fashioned dance-off that only added to engagement levels.

Momentarily swapping his Thrift Shop for a candy shop, the energetic entertainer launched lollies into the standing zone before tricking fans into a false finish as he scurried off stage.

He soon emerged with Tones and I for a poignant rendition of Good Old Days, sporting a Wallabies rugby shirt as he embraced the Dance Monkey singer who he claimed had offered to perform for free.

Signing off with a ‘shoey’, the Mack reinforced an Aussie trend that has fast become a tradition for touring performers of all disciplines.

One final rendition of Can’t Hold Us raised the ceiling yet again as confetti rained over the crowd.

In the words of Macklemore himself: “That is how you end a f***ing tour.”
