Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley will not reprise her starring role in West End hit Bonnie and Clyde after the tour was abruptly cancelled.

The 40-year-old actor played Blanche Barrow in the West End musical from February to May and was set to return to the stage for the September to October leg of their UK tour.

But in a new social media post the acclaimed musical – based on the infamous crime duo – announced it was ‘concluding the UK and Ireland Tour with immediate effect’.

The post continued: ‘We would like to thank the extremely hard working and endlessly talented cast and company that have entertained thousands of audience members across the country with this production.’

The news has left fans devastated. Although no reason was stated, many suspect it could be due to low ticket sales.

‘Genuinely one of the best shows I’ve seen – theatre is so hard to sell in advance these days,’ user @cjcooke wrote.

‘The cast are so talented & Katie Tonkinson was superb as Bonnie. It had been the best show I’d seen in a long time. Very sorry to all involved,’ @mrrichiew echoed.

Bonnie and Clyde won Best New Musical at the 2023 WhatsOnStage Awards and featured music by Tony nominee Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde) and lyrics by Tony and Oscar winner Don Black.

This role was Catherine’s musical theatre debut in which gangster Blanche has the big number That’s What You Call A Dream. The actor is best known for playing Eva Price on ITV soap Coronation Street which she left in 2018.

‘I fell in love with [Bonnie and Clyde] and I knew that this was the one musical I had to do. I’ve been extremely lucky with film and television but I’ve waited a long time for this,’ Catherine said at the time.

Although the star won’t be returning to the stage, it hasn’t been all bad news.

In April, Channel 5 series The Good Ship Murder was renewed for two more season and a 2024 Christmas special.

The successful first season followed Shayne Ward as cabaret singer turned detective Jack Grayling and First Officer Kate Woods played by Catherine as they solved murder mysteries on a on a luxury Mediterranean cruise ship.

Creator Mike Benson said at the time: ‘Series one was something of a journey – or mid-price cruise – into the unknown, not least trying to film a drama on a cruise ship with 6,000 holidaymakers heading to eight different countries.’

In an interview with Radio Times, Catherine shared there is a lot of guest star interest in season two.

‘I’ve already got a lot of my friends who are like, “Oh my God, I can’t believe you went filming in Malta on a cruise ship! Is there a second series? I need to get on to my agent!”‘ she said.

‘Like, a lot of actors all want to do Death in Paradise because of the location. And I’ve already got people asking me if we’re going again.’

The Corrie star has previously opened up about facing imposter syndrome in her career.

‘It’s decisions like that where I do have days of self-doubt, I do have impostor syndrome but to my truest self, I know I can do it,’ she said on the White Wine Question Time podcast.

‘It’s digging deep on those days where you feel really low and you don’t have any confidence.

‘Moments like that have taught me that sometimes taking a risk and making a small sacrifice can absolutely pay off. You’ve got to be dedicated in this industry.’

Catherine has also starred in BBC sitcom Scarborough and as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.
