brits' cheeky nickname for the general election leaves people 'feeling sick'

Brits' have a cheeky new nickname for the General Election

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a General Election for July 4 in a statement outside No10 Downing Street yesterday (May 22) evening.

Addressing the nation, the PM got soaked soaked in the rain as he told people: “Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future."

And like most things, his announcement and speech was quickly discussed by Brits online as they aired their views on the situation, and of course, shared a host of cheeky memes.

However, among the jokes and rants, a new term for the general election was coined by cheeky Brits. And although some are loving it, other people have admitted it's left them 'feeling sick'.

And what is it we hear you ask? Well after the Cozzie Livs and the Platty Jubes, we now have.... the Genny Lex.

After the term quickly begun circulating on X (formerly Twitter), people couldn't help hold their opinion back on it. And most of it wasn't very favourable.

One person wrote: "Seen someone refer to the General Election as “genny lex”, I actually hate this country." While another added: "I've just seen the #generalelection called genny lex, and now I need a lie down!"

A third chimed in: "Just someone call the general election the genny lex. Please stop." While a fourth agreed: "Stop trying to make genny lex happen! It’s not going to happen."

Someone else said: "Just heard the term Genny Lex for the first time, which simultaneously made me feel sick and also tbh quite impressed me. I love that as a nation we're keeping this Lingy Trad going."

While a further X used joked: "Genny Lex sounds like a someone who came 6th on Love Island, didn’t get any brand deals & now sells crystals on TikTok live."

Despite the backlash, some Brits were all for it, as one wrote: "It has come to my attention not everyone is aware of the term ‘Genny lex’. This is completely unacceptable and must be rectified immediately.

While another added: "Genny Lex. I really like that." A third chimed in: "Happy Genny Lex season."

In his statement, Sunak said the country has 'fought through the most challenging times since the Second World War' in the last five years.

He told the British people: "Over the next few weeks, I will fight for every vote. I will earn your trust. And I will prove to you that only a Conservative government led by me will not put our hard-earned economic stability at risk, can restore pride and confidence in our country, and with a clear plan and bold action that will deliver a secure future for you, your family and our United Kingdom."
