Local elections 2024: Who are the candidates running for Dublin City Council? Everything you need to know before voting

More than 170 candidates are on the ballot for local election to Dublin City Council, where there are 63 seats up for grabs across 11 local electoral areas.

Who runs the council as it stands?

Fianna Fáil councillor Daithí De Róiste has served as the Lord Mayor of Dublin since he was elected in June 2023, and his party is the largest in the chambers with 11 councillors at present.

The ruling grouping on the council currently consists of Fianna Fáil, the Green Party, Labour and the Social Democrats who together hold 34 of of the total 63 seats and drafted the ‘Dublin Agreement’ at the beginning of this term.

It outlined their plans for housing, transport, climate and other areas.

Just 16 Dublin City councillors are not running for re-election, with 47 sitting councillors set to contest their seats.

What are the burning issues of the constituency?

Housing and policing remain the biggest issues for Dublin City Council. According to latest figures, almost 75pc of all homeless people nationally are in Dublin, including 1,453 families, 4,487 adults and 3,181 children.

The average market rent recently hit €2,395 and just 1,200 homes were available for rent on property site Daft.ie on the first of May. Demand far outweighs supply in Dublin.

There are also serious concerns around safety and policing in the city centre, with the Dublin riots becoming an unprecedented flashpoint last November. Luas trams, buses and garda cars were set alight, shops were looted and gardaí were attacked by rioters. Other high-profile incidents – including issues relating to anti-social behaviour and public order – have also made headlines.

Dealing with immigration is not a function of local government and it is not within the remit of DCC to provide services or accommodation, though ‘tent city’ – the encampments of asylum seekers along Mount Street by the International Protection Office and the banks of the Grand Canal – has become synonymous with immigration and the wider crisis in accommodation for those seeking refuge here.

Three multi-agency operations have now taken place to offer alternative accommodation to those sleeping rough.

Other important issues within DCC include public transport, drinking water supply and wastewater treatment facilities.

What areas does it cover?

There are 11 local electoral areas and each holds between five and seven seats on Dublin City Council, which has 63 seats in total. These electoral areas are:

  • Cabra-Glasnevin (7 seats)
  • North Inner City (7 seats)
  • Artane-Whitehall (6 seats)
  • Clontarf (6 seats)
  • Donaghmede (5 seats)
  • Ballymun-Finglas (6 seats)
  • Ballyfermot-Drimnagh (5 seats)
  • South West Inner City (5 seats)
  • Kimmage-Rathmines (6 seats)
  • Pembroke (5 seats)
  • South East Inner City (5 seats)

How many candidates does each party have?

There are 171 candidates in total contesting the election for Dublin City Council, which is made up of 63 seats.

There are 19 candidates from Fianna Fáil standing for election, 16 from Fine Gael and 11 from the Green Party.

Sinn Féin is running the largest number of candidates out of any one party, with 30 names on the ballot.

There are 13 Labour candidates, 11 People Before Profit candidates and 13 Social Democrats candidates

There are 40 non-party candidates and a number of candidates from other, smaller parties, including 5 from The Irish People, two from the National Party, two from Right To Change, one from the Workers’ Party and one from the Irish Freedom Party.
