Ian Wright has noticed one significant issue that England could face in the upcoming European Championship.

Gareth Southgate, announced his 33-man provisional squad on Tuesday and left many fans debating his choices, after deciding to leave out the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Fikayo Tomori.

While some said players were called up based on their recent performances, there were others who have recently been out with injuries or not started much for their respective teams.

Luke Shaw has been included ahead of the upcoming friendlies with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland, despite not playing for three months due to a hamstring injury.

In an interview for The Sun, former Match of the Day pundit Wright expressed concerns about a major squad problem that Gareth Southgate will have to 'sort out', despite remained positive about their prospects at Euro 2024.

England's defensive issues have presented Southgate with a massive headache, with Harry Maguire, John Stones, Shaw and Trippier all hit by injuries in recent months.

The left back position presents a particular cause for concern, with Ben Chilwell left out, and Southgate considering Kieran Trippier - who regularly plays at right back - and has only recently returned from a calf injury.

'Obviously our defence is something he's going to have to sort out,' Wright told The Sun.

Southgate could experiment with Liverpool's Joe Gomez to cover Shaw's position, after previously filling in for Andrew Robertson at the Reds when the Scotland international was out injured.

However, the Arsenal legend remains optimistic about England's performance in the upcoming tournament and stands firm regarding the team's attacking front line.

That is despite England captain Harry Kane also recently suffering with an injury, though the Three Lions boss insists the Bayern Munich striker is 'okay'.

Wright said: 'When we're looking at how some of our players are performing - Harry Kane, amazing, top scorer in Germany, Jude Bellingham in Spain, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer we are seeing unbelievable football from.

'So yeah I am very much always going for England, especially with the last few tournaments as semi-finalists, at least with what we've got so I'm not gonna back off from that - it's not just that I want England to do it, our team is good enough.'
